The Crystal Caves is a hidden dungeon accessible from the Crystal Library. It contains a number of caverns and winding tunnels filled with medium- to high-level mobs, with a level 55 Crystal Golem boss at the end. Notably, it is one of the only locations in Equestria where Spatial Crystals can be mined.

Accessing

To enter the caves, three ponies must be standing on the snowflake sign on the first floor of the Crystal Library.

Two ponies must be standing on the left and right diagonal tips of the snowflake facing the library entrance. A chime will be heard when they are on the correct position. The third pony must go to the snowflake tip furthest from the library entrance and pull on a subtly-glowing book on the bookshelf. The book itself has no title, and is the fourth book to the right of the center divider, on the second shelf from the bottom.

The book can be pulled by clicking the book and selecting "Pull!" or by pressing "T" (or whatever hotkey was configured for the "Talk" action) while standing near the book. If everything was done properly, all three ponies will be teleported to the caves.

Dungeon Mechanics

The caves consist of multiple distinguishable caverns that are connected by portals and separated by gates.

Portals will only activate when the vicinity is cleared of mobs. This will be shown by the portal changing color from red to blue.

A notable puzzle room is the color-changing portals. The correct portal will progress the player through the dungeon, while the wrong one will send the player back to the start of the puzzle. In order to determine the correct portal, players must match the color sequence of the portal with the color sequence of the crystals in the passageway leading to the puzzle room.

The gate's color and texture determines the mechanism to open it. For example, orange gates only open without mobs near them, while purple gates open only if there are mobs nearby.

Boss

A level 55 Crystal Golem lurks at the bottom of the dungeon. It has two main attacks:

  • A headbutt, which deals significant damage at close range and knocks players back
  • A laser attack, which is telegraphed by a thin purple beam for 2 seconds, before turning into a white beam which deals high damage.

Transfusion may be useful in cleaving away large portions of the Crystal Golem's high Health, as it deals damage based on a percentage of the target's maximum health.

The Crystal Golem will always drop a Crystal Golem Shard when defeated, which is used to claim the reward from the NPC Way Out in the passageway immediately following the boss room.

The Crystal Golem respawns in 30 seconds, so players are advised to make their way to the orange-gated passageway as soon as they have obtained the Crystal Golem Shard.
